Gerald P. Dwyer is Professor Emeritus and BB&T Scholar at Clemson University. He was the founding Director of the Center for Financial Innovation and Stability and a Vice President at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. He is a Research Associate at the Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis at Australian National University and a Senior Fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research. Dr. Dwyer’s research has appeared in leading economics and finance journals, Federal Reserve Bank publications and books. He is a co-editor of Finance Research Letters and is on the editorial board of the Journal of Financial Stability. He is a past President and member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Private Enterprise Education. He also was a founding member of the Society for Nonlinear Dynamics and Econometrics, an organization which he served as President and as Treasurer. Dr. Dwyer’s recent research is on financial innovation, especially crypto-assets, and financial regulation. He has a long-standing interest in digital money. His first paper on the topic is “Is There a Future for Electronic Currency on the World Wide Web?” published in 1999 in E*Journal. His widely cited paper explaining the economics of cryptocurrencies appeared in 2015 in the Journal of Financial Stability. He subsequently has published a Heritage Backgrounder on Bitcoin with Norbert Michel, a primer on blockchain and a summary paper on regulation of cryptocurrencies. He also taught a new course on cryptocurrencies for undergraduate and graduate students for four years at Clemson.
